Pet of the week: Jos, the handsome Corgie look-a-like
Posted on September 07, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments

Jos, the short legged Corgie
Meet “Jos,” a very handsome redhead who loves people. He’s a short legged Corgie look-alike. Here he is getting acquainted with Bonaire visitor Colton Reed from Cobb, California. Colton always makes it a point to stop in for a visit to the Shelter when he’s on the island. Jos is one of those dogs with a good self image and confidence.
Even though he’s been at the Shelter only a short time he knows his name and has enchanted the staff with his easy going charm and sociability. Here’s a smart dog with who can learn quickly. Jos is about one and a half years old, has been sterilized, has had his worming and shots and is in perfect health.
You may see him and the other cats and dogs up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Elizabeth, a very rare beauty
Posted on August 31, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments

Elisabeth the cat, a rare beauty
Jane Madden, one of the spokespersons from the Bonaire Animal Shelter’s cat cage residents, writes about our Pet of the Week, “Elizabeth.” “Elizabeth is a very rare beauty! Red and white female cats are quite uncommon… and Elizabeth carries her colors with regal bearing.
She is only five months old but already has a strong and sturdy physique unlike most female cats and will be a beautiful adult queen. Her exceptional beauty is accentuated by amber eyes that are deep and soulful. Elizabeth has a gentle and loving demeanor and loves to be handled and carried…but bring out the toys and the royal robes are off and she’s a fun-loving kitten at play. She loves other cats, dogs but is perfectly happy with just human companionship.”
The adoption fee for cats is NAƒ 95 and that includes tests for feline leukemia, shots, worming and even sterilization. You can be assured you’re getting a healthy and sociable pet when you adopt from our Shelter.

Terra and Colton: pets of the week
Posted on August 20, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments

Pets of the week : Terra and Colton at the Animal Shelter Bonaire
Here’s “Terra” cuddling up with visitor Colton Reed, 9. Colton, who lives in Cobb, California, was here on a visit to his Bonaire family and of course wouldn’t miss a trip to the Animal Shelter.
He’s shown with Terra, one of the most outstanding dogs at the Shelter right now. Although she isn’t a striking beauty, her inner character shines through and makes us fall in love with her. She comes highly rated by the Shelter staff and gets along well with kids, other dogs and even cats. She’s about a year and a half old with frizzy fur and short but efficient legs. She’s sterilized and healthy and very social. And she’s enjoying being hugged by Colton.
Colton remarked that he thought it was great that the animals get to be together here at the Shelter and that he could actually go in and play with them. The Shelter he visited in the States wouldn’t allow that, he said. They are all kept in separate cages. Another kudo for our Shelter.

Pieter is pet of the week at Animal Shelter Bonaire
Posted on August 08, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment

Pieter our pet of the week
We couldn’t resist taking a photo of this darling little cat, “Pieter,” hiding out among the branches in the cat cage at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Jane Disko Madden, kitty guru of the Shelter, explains. “Pieter is a very fuzzy, very funny little guy! He arrived with his sister, Petra, as seven-weekold, very feral kittens. With the love and encouragement of the Shelter staff, they were nurtured into loveable sweethearts now 10 weeks old!
Petra has been adopted and will begin sailing the Caribbean with her co-captain in the next few weeks. Pieter is waiting for his forever companion to arrive. Pieter’s grey, brown and black striped fur is extremely soft and fuzzy and along with his white mittens and socks he’ll be a very photogenic pal. He is not afraid of anything….dog, cat or person…and will play with cats five times his size and win the play battle! But when playtime is done, he’ll curl up in your lap for a dose of pets and an afternoon snooze.”
Of course, like all the other adoptees at the Shelter, Pieter is in excellent health, having been checked out by the vet, had his test for feline leukemia, wormed and will be sterilized when he’s old enough. All this is included in the cat adoption fee of NAƒ 95. You may meet him at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Queenie and her kittens
Posted on July 19, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Just a few days ago this mother cat, “Queenie”, was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter. She had been found by a Good Samaritan with her two new born kittens: one black and one striped like its mom. Then, a few days later someone found another newborn kitten, a black and white one, and brought it into the Shelter to hopefully save its life.
Usually a kitten as young as this with no mother is sure to die, but when the new kitten was brought to Queenie, she immediately adopted it as her own and began feeding and cleaning it. That’s why she’s named Queenie – she’s a queen among cats. What a fine character this cat has! After her motherly duties are finished Queenie will be sterilized and put up for adoption so she will have an opportunity for a happy life. You may see her and her kittens at the Shelter.

Ronald, the big black dog at the Shelter Bonaire
Posted on June 18, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment
Ronald, the big black dog in the photo, looks like a mellow guy and he is with those he loves. But watch out if someone comes along with bad intentions! He turns into a very efficient watch dog. Ronald is about a year and a half and was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter because his owner was moving to a place where no pets are allowed.
What a pleasant and smart dog, and he’s friendly and affectionate too. You have to meet him in person to really see what a great animal he is. He’s healthy, having been checked out by the vet, has had his shots, tests, worming and even his sterilization already.
He’s ready to go to someone who will treat him with the love and respect he deserves. You may meet him at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Gibby in the supermarket of kittens
Posted on June 13, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Here’s Bonaire Animal Shelter Volunteer Hettie Holian showing off one of the 15 adorable kittens now available for adoption. (We think it’s 10-week-old “Gibby.”)
What a choice of beautiful kittens right now – all under three months old.
As Shelter volunteer Jane Madden tells us, “It’s a supermarket of kittens.
They come in all colors – red, red and white, black, black and white and everything in between. And they’re all wonderful!” All these robust little guys and girls are full of fun and love to be cuddled. If you’ve been thinking about getting a kitten to love, now’s the time to make your choice. The NAƒ 95 cat adoption fee covers all: testing for feline leukemia, vet exam, shots, worming and sterilization when they’re old enough.
Meet these kittens and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm.

Yoris the beagle look-a-like
Posted on May 30, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Yoris may be a beagle look-alike but he’s bigger and more impressive than that. In fact he’s considered an excellent watch dog and he should deter anyone who shouldn’t be in his yard. But with his human friends Yoris is very mellow, shy even, and he takes awhile to warm up to people and other dogs. But when he does it makes it all worth it. This handsome pup is about a year and a half old; he’s been sterilized, has had his shots, worming and tests and is ready to go to an appreciative home.
The adoption fee at the Shelter for dogs is NAƒ 125 and includes all this. To meet Yoris and the other healthy and social pets up for adoption visit the Bonaire Animal Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 1 and 3 to 5.

Wire haired Xante found in the drop off cage
Posted on May 13, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment
“Xante” (pronounced “Santi”) just loves being held, and here she is with Bonaire Animal Shelter Manager Marlies. Xante looks like a real scouring pad on legs and she gives true meaning to the term, “wire haired.” But inside her nature is loving and friendly. Playing with the Shelter staff and with the other dogs is top on her list. She’s about seven months old and will be a medium size dog.
She was dropped off at the cage, the Kouchi di Bestia, outside the Shelter so her history isn’t known. What is known is that this is a very special dog that everyone just loves. She deserves to go to the most loving home. Xante has been examined by the vet, has had her tests and shots and is ready to go. The dog adoption fee of NAƒ125 includes all that plus sterilization.
You may see her at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9-1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989

Young Cai with Nora the Kitty
Posted on April 29, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment
Young Cai just happened to be visiting the Bonaire Animal Shelter with his mom, Amanda, when we stopped by to take some photos of our “pets of the week.” What a good model he is, especially when he gets to hold one of the residents of the Cat Cage. The lucky kitty he’s holding is “Nora.”
Cat Cage Expert, Jane Madden writes about Nora: “This all white cat is Nora, sister of Nadine that you did a piece on a while ago who did get adopted. Nora is still with us and is just as sweet, if not sweeter, than her sister was. Nora is about seven months old and a very playful young girl who screams around at 100 miles an hour playing with any toy that she can find … But…the minute you scoop her up she is a cuddly little lamb who just beams at you with her big amber eyes and purrs like a little engine. She would be a perfect fit in a home with children who want a cat to play with, or with an adult family who likes to entertain and be entertained by a wonderful pussycat.”
Nora has been checked out by the vet, has had her test for feline leukemia, worming, shots and is in perfect health. The cat adoption fee of NAƒ 75 includes all this plus sterilization. Such a deal and you have a proven healthy and social animal to bring home.
When you’re visiting Rincon Day, Friday April 30, look for the Animal Shelter stand selling all sorts of interesting “Bonaire brocante,” household items, books, and bric a brac. See you there.

Winsome Florecita
Posted on April 15, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 2 Comments

Winsome “Floricita” was found in the Kouchi Pa Bestia (animal drop off) outside the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Her past is a mystery, but the good news is that she was taken to a place (the Animal Shelter) where she can have a chance at a good life and not have to wander the streets. What a darling she is.
She’s about two months old and looks like she’ll be a very handsome large shepherd when she grows up. But it will be fun to enjoy her puppyhood because she’s so sweet and friendly and loves to play. Not only does Floricita have the attractive black and tan markings of a shepherd but she sports an incredible curling tail. What a girl! The vet has pronounced her fit and healthy and she has had her tests, worming and shots. She’s ready to go. And the NAƒ105 adoption fee covers all that plus sterilization when she’s old enough.
You may see Floricita at the Bonaire Animal Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989. Take a look at their website too. It’s kept up to date by a hard working Shelter manager: www.AnimalShelterBonaire.com

Sylvie, the cat
Posted on March 17, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Here’s a story with a happy ending. “Sylvie” the cat was found on the street on New Year’s Eve. She was lost, terrified and miserable. She was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter by a Good Samaritan and put in a separate cage as she was too scared to even be with other animals. But over the weeks with the love and attention of the Shelter staff and volunteers, little by little she became tame and relaxed and could be put in the Cat Cage. Now she’s a very affectionate and friendly cat who has become a favorite with the staff. What a transformation!
Sylvie is about nine months old; she’s been checked out by the vet and given her shots and tests and is ready to go to a good home. However, Sylvie should be adopted as an “only cat” as she still prefers not being around other cats. The NAƒ 75 cat adoption fee covers all this – a healthy and social cat – plus sterilization. You may see Sylvie at the Bonaire Animal Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday,9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Young Querien and her sister Queenie
Posted on March 10, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Young “Quirien” was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter along with her sister “Queenie.” The people who brought them in just had too many dogs to take care of.
“Quirien” is so proud and a darling. She’s alert – just look at those standing up ears – and loves to show off the snow white fur on her chest. She’s friendly but not to someone who shouldn’t be in her yard. This girl will be a fine watch dog. It was good luck for Quirien and Queenie to be brought in because at the Shelter if the dog is in good health and is social with people they will be put up for adoption. Both dogs have been checked out by the vet, had their shots, worming and tests and are ready to go. When they are a little older they will be sterilized. All this for the dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105.
You may meet her and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Roly poly, happy puppy Jeroen
Posted on February 23, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
One picture can be worth a thousand words!
He’s a roly poly, happy puppy now, but little “Jeroen” had a very sad beginning to his life. He was almost run over by a car when he was just five weeks old, but a good Samaritan found him and brought him into the Bonaire Animal Shelter.
Because he was so young and frail he had to go home to live with Shelter Director Marlies who had to feed him by hand. But now at seven weeks he’s one of the cutest puppies we’ve ever seen. Who would not agree? He’s like a wooly little bear with a wonderful disposition and attitude towards life. He’s been checked out by the vet, wormed, had his shots and will be sterilized when he’s old enough. The dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105 covers all of this and you may always be assured to getting a healthy and well adjusted and social animal from the Shelter.
Who Cares? They did!
Posted on February 07, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 2 Comments
Last week on Monday Leandro Martinez and Luis Flores were conducting a guided tour on ATV quads with cruise ship passengers.
Somewhere along the road from Lagun to Spelonk one of the tourists spotted a puppy. The whole caravan came to a standstill when one puppy after another came stumbling from behind the rocks. The joint effort resulted in the rescue of 10 puppies of barely six weeks old. Alas, the mother was nowhere to be found.
That afternoon Leandro and Luis came to the Bonaire Animal Shelter saying, “We have a problem,” and with big smiles they handed the Shelter’s staff one of the quad’s blue boxes filled to capacity with the 10 puppies. Sadly, three of the pups didn’t make it, but the other seven are doing fine.
As they were covered in a tsunami of lice they were bathed repeatedly, they were also dewormed and got their shots. They’re still a bit wobbly and sleeping a lot, but in a week or two they will be strong and handsome and ready for adoption! Thanks to Leandro and Luis and the tourists seven little dogs’ lives were saved because they cared!
In addition to this event, the Shelter has built a new facility for the public to use: a kennel outside the gate where people can drop off pets at any time. Leaving an animal at the Shelter has always been for free and it always will be, but somehow there are still people who prefer to dump the pets in the mondi which hopefully won’t be necessary anymore.

Tiny Marie
Posted on January 24, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Here is the tiniest kitten in the cat cage at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. This little grey tabby is named “Marie.” She’s an orphan and she nearly died before she even had much of a life. Some kind children, out biking, found her and her litter mates. It seemed the kittens were chasing the bikes. Marie was so small and starving that she had to go home with Monique to be fed every few hours with a bottle. The other kittens have been adopted and there’s just Marie now. She’s sure to remain a smallish cat due to her first weeks of malnutrition.
But today she’s in fine shape and healthy and so happy to be alive.
You may see her and the other healthy and social adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Her name is Lola
Posted on January 01, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Her name is “Lola,” and maybe she is a dancer… like the song says. This Lola came into the Bonaire Animal Shelter with her long black fur all matted and dirty. What a mess. The staff washed her, tried to comb her and ended up having to cut nearly all her fur off. But that was awhile ago and now she’s looking better every day.
Curly and cute and energetic and sweet. Lola is about eight months old and in perfect condition, both inside and out. Not only that but she is a good hunter too. That should appeal to those people who want a pet who can discourage marauding lizards and iguanas from eating their plants!
Remember too that the dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105 covers her vet exam, tests, worming, shots and even sterilization. And you can be assured of getting a fine healthy and social pet when you adopt from the Shelter.
It’s on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989. Looking for a worthwhile Christmas gift for someone who has everything?

Oscar: the handsome young gentleman
Posted on January 01, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Oscar’s good friend, Shelter volunteer Jane Madden, wrote his biography this week: “That handsome young gentleman is Oscar…and he truly is a gentleman. Although less than a year old he has the manners and demeanor of a mature, content cat. He gets along famously with all his roommates, young, old, male or female. No roughhousing or showing off…
Oscar is willing to snuggle up and snooze with anyone who wants to cuddle with him…including people. His coat is a soft and gorgeous deep orange/red, a very unusual color for cats on Bonaire. Oscar would make a fine addition to any home…he is comfortable with other animals and children or would be just as happy to be an ‘only cat.’

Finn and Petunia
Posted on November 27, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
This young lady, Finn, nine years old, is a regular volunteer at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Finn is a student at the Pelican School and you will find here at the Shelter every wednesday, helping out with all the pets. Here she is with new arrival, “Petunia,” a seven-week-old puppy who came into the Shelter with her brother. Their mother was hit and killed by a car but luckily the puppies were found and brought into the Shelter.
Finn’s job that day was to bathe both puppies and she did a fine job. Petunia’s brother already has been adopted but he and Petunia will have to stay on until they are a little older and stronger. Both puppies are healthy and in perfect shape for their age. They’ve had their tests, worming and will be sterilized when they’re old enough. You can always be sure that adopting a dog or cat from the Shelter assures you of a “nearly perfect” pet – healthy and social.
You may see “Petunia” and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road,
open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Guus on the move
Posted on October 30, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Here‘s Guus, -our featured pet, ―on the move. This is just to show you that he‘s in terrific shape after a very shaky beginning to his life. He got the dreaded disease, Parvo, and he nearly died, but this spunky and clever dog came through it all and now he‘s in perfect health and full of energy.
Guus is a medium sized dog with an interesting combination of fur design – big spots and little spots – attractively placed, like he‘s been rained upon with black ink. He has the short haired coat that makes him easy to care for. No expensive trips to the doggy hairdressers for cuts and styling. He‘s about six months old and has had his tests, worming and shots. And he‘ll be sterilized when he‘s old enough.
The dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105 covers all of this medical work. As are all the adoptees at the Bonaire Animal Shelter he is in top health and completely social with people and other dogs. You may see him at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

My best features are from my Siamese heritage that gives me deep blue eyes and cream and brown complexion. My little secret is that I am blind in one eye from a childhood injury, but it is no handicap and even bluer than my other one!
I’m gorgeous
Posted on October 02, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
I’m gorgeous, but I don’t have the attitude that comes with it! I’m not a girly girl, I don’t mind getting dirty or working hard. I’m fun loving and I like to have people around me. To find a good home means everything to me. As I will be sterilized soon, my new family doesn’t have to put up with boyfriends and all the problems that come with having a beautiful young girl at home. To tell you the truth: I know who I am and what I stand for… to me it’s all about family and girlpower!
Beautiful baby girl
Posted on October 02, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Beautiful baby girl with great potential, is looking for a loving family. I’m an easy going little girl who doesn’t throw herself into tantrums.
I’m funny, smart and sweet and I love to be hugged and cuddled and I love to play, but I take a lot of naps too. As I’m still a baby I can’t be alone all day, so I would really like my new mom or dad to spend a lot of time with me!
Handsome teenage boy
Posted on October 02, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
Handsome teenage boy, in the midst of his puberty, is looking for a forever family. I am a mellow guy who doesn’t like fights and I respect a mature person’s opinion. I love the outdoors – to play soccer or go for a swim – and it would be really nice if my forever family would have a boy my age, so we can hang out together and become friends for life.
Cor is a darling
Posted on September 18, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
“Cor is a darling,” they say at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. “He’s just so sweet.” Not only that but he’s a very handsome fellow too. A strong strain of Siamese is obvious in Cor’s background when you see his beautiful blue eyes and pale shades of beige on white coloring.
He was found abandoned at Sabal Palm and when it was discovered that he was such a special cat he was immediately put up for adoption.
Cor has been sterilized and he’s in top health, having had all his checkups, testing, worming and shots. He’s about a year old.

It’s a dog! It’s a rabbit! No, it’s a dog.
Posted on September 04, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
It’s a dog! It’s a rabbit! No, it’s a dog. Check out those stand up ears on sweet little “Hendrika.” Some dogs wag their tails when they’re happy or excited, but Hendrika does even more when she gets those ears to stand up. Pretty amazing.
This happy little pup is friendly and fun, but she’s not a high energy dog. She prefers to stay in the background; she’s not be a pushy type like many others around.
Hendrika is about three months old and is in top health. She’s a medium sized dog with easy to care for short caramel colored fur which encourages petting.

Fantastic Guard dog Zack
Posted on August 21, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment
Here’s a dog that could be an answer to someone’s dream. He’s a fantastic guard dog with a deep bark but his short legs keep him from jumping over a fence or wall! What a combination. You don’t have to build up your wall or fence to contain him!
He’s Zacharius, “Zack” for short (pardon the pun). This handsome fellow is about five months old and is in perfect form. He has a well balanced assertive manner that shows he has self confidence. His cropped caramel colored fur is easy to care for and he was inquisitive deep brown eyes.
Of course he, as are all the other pets for adoption at the Bonaire Animal Shelter, is in top health and is social with people and other pets (but not with burglars!).

Extravagant Jill
Posted on August 07, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | No Comments
This is “Jill” and this is her extravagantly elegantly tail. Not only does she have a luxurious tail but she’s a rare one as normally cats with red fur such as hers are male. She’s a very playful little cat and loves being around people and other cats.
Jill came into the Bonaire Animal Shelter because her owner could no longer take care of her. It’s lucky for some possible owner out there who can appreciate a very special cat.
