In January the Bonaire Animal Shelter officially received a very brand new single cabin, long bed, heavy duty, 2.7 turbo diesel white pickup truck from Stichting Dierenlot from the Netherlands. We’ve made a video about this event. It was a Great Day!

Marlies and Bert

Bert,” being hugged by Shelter manager Marlies, is a mystery dog. The Shelter staff knows nothing about his history – who his parents were, where he came from – because he was found in the Kouchi pa Bestia (drop off kennel) outside the gate of the Shelter. But this wire haired pup was immediately welcomed as he looks like a younger version of one of the full time Shelter resident dogs, “Charlie.”That was good news for Bert, especially when he had his check up with the vet and found to be in good health and would be put up for adoption.

He’s about five months old and he should grow up to be a big dog. Another nice thing is that Bert is a mellow and very gentle dog, not in the least hyper, and would be good with children. Just looking at him and that funny face.

Shelter news

This last year, 2011, 800 animals were brought into the Shelter (65% dogs and 35% cats). There were 208 adoptions and 30 animals were reunited with their owners. (So you know who to call if you lose your cat or dog.)

The year before, in 2010, there were 217 adoptions. Of the animals brought in 75% were dogs and 25% cats. Compared to 2010, this last year, 2011, there were fewer dogs in the Shelter. The Shelter staff believes this has to do with the free sterilization program. That program will continue in 2012 and they will focus more on the free sterilization of cats.

Happy Puppy New Year

Just to say Happy New Year we had to show you these five little puppies, some of the first to arrive at the Shelter this year with their mom.

They are roly poly little guys, three females and one male (the fifth one has already been tagged to be adopted). They will probably be medium sized dogs, judging by their mother.

All of them are getting the best of care, a private kennel and have been examined by the vet. They will be available for adoption at six to seven weeks. Of course, these puppies, like all the other adoptees, are healthy and social.

You may see them at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday 8 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

New Pickup for the Animal Shelter

On Saturday January 14, around noon, the Bonaire Animal Shelter officially received a very brand new single cabin, long bed, heavy duty, 2.7 turbo diesel white pickup truck from the Nederlandse Stichting Dierenlot. This Dutch Foundation helps animal welfare organizations in Holland and the Dutch Caribbean (WWW.Dier.nu). This utility vehicle was the 421th project of the very active Dutch foundation. The brand new truck is very visible in every day’s traffic because of the “zebra” striping and graphics delivered by Gaia Productions, Image and Digital Design from Bonaire, saying, Yuda bestianan na peliger riba Boneiru, sostené Fundashon Dierenlot. (Help animals in danger on Bonaire, support the Fundashon Dierenlot). The Dutch foundation tries to support organizations that take care of health and protect animals in Holland and the Dutch Caribbean. The Shelter employees and volunteers will use the truck for transportation of cats and dogs, especially those who are in need of the free-of-charge sterilization project. For a long time a reliable truck was on the list of suggested gifts for the Shelter. A lack of money was always the problem. Now the Nederlandse Stichting Dierenlot solved the problem with the new pickup. The Shelter will take as good care of the pickup as they do for their animals. Some hundred citizens were there when the new truck was adopted and baptized! One of the citizens suggested the truck was equipped with a “waving light”*.

THE TRUCK

The white single cabin long bed truck was produced in September 2011 and is as new as new can be. /jb). The white work horse is fully equipped and the flat black front bumper and the artificial leather seats remind you of the enthusiasm of the vehicle to do the job. The engine is a good runner, the dashboard is complete, the odometer reads only 35 kilometers and the trip meter is reset (by me/jb) on zero. *There is just one fancy and unknown flip flap button mounted in the center of the dashboard. So I fiddle a little with the aftermarket thing. Nothing seems to happen. Then people try to get my attention: I just engaged the orange colored Hella flashing light mounted on top of the single cabin!

Pet of the Week: Iggy,” the Interactive Cat”

Some people claim they would love to have a cat but they find them aloof and standoffish and want a pet that is more attentive. Well, if you are one of those people the Shelter has the “purrfect” cat for you….”Iggy,” the Interactive Cat!

Iggy is the most affectionate, social cat that you will find. Give him the invitation and he will leap onto your shoulders and hang around your neck all day long. He talks to you, gives kisses and purrs with a loud chirping sound as long as he is near you. The most amazing thing is that he understands the word “no”…..a word that is not normally in a cat’s vocabulary! When you decide that you’ve had enough of his attention and you don’t want him around your neck anymore, simply put him down on the floor, point your finger at him and say “no.” Iggy then gives you a very sad, pouty look but immediately lies down and leaves you alone until you invite him up for the next round of affection. Iggy truly is an interactive cat! And he’s gorgeous… dark orange silky soft fur and beautiful facial markings and expressions. He is about one year old, sterilized, healthy and ready to interact with anyone who wants to share in some purr-fect feline love.

Happy new year : Fireworks and pets

Fireworks can cause a great deal of stress for dogs and cats. Pets simply don’t understand what’s going on and many are really scared of the loud bangs and flashes.
The poster below is a reminder to be considerate for cats, dogs and other pets on Bonaire when letting off your fireworks!

Shelter auction was a big success !

Shelter Manager Marlies Tiepel writes: “We made $15,000 at the Shelter Auction on December 10! This was the most successful fundraising event ever for the Shelter. And actually we made more because a Dutch animal welfare fund, Dierenlot (www.dier.nu), doubled the first $1,750 we raised that evening, so we raised $16,750 ($15,000 + $1,750)!

We sold 110 dinner tickets for a fantastic Indonesian meal. The chefs were Rosita Paiman, Boudewijn Scholts and Jerry van de Weteringe. The auction was organized by Annemarie Rozendal and she did a great job!
With the money we made that evening we going to build a totally new cage for the dogs!”

Shelter Fundraising: For who? For dogs like Veronica!

Tonight saturday December 10th the Bonaire Animal Shelter again organizes the Art and Fun Auction!

The Shelter on Bonaire still has trouble maintaining the terrain due to lack of funds. Volunteers certainly do a terrific job but they can’t do it all. For example, there is an urgent need to rebuild the kennels we use for the first reception of incoming dogs. The kennels need to be made safer, more hygienic and watertight.

The shelter organizes the art auction for the dogs and the cats in the shelter. We do it for the dogs in the Bonaire Animal Shelter! Dogs like Veronica who suffered from mange. We helped Veronica and after 10 days she looked much better… Do you remember her story?
