Pet of the week: Kevin the beautiful, long haired tabby cat
Posted on April 13, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off
Kevin” is a recent arrival at the Bonaire Animal Shelter and is one of the most beautiful, long haired tabby cats the Shelter has ever seen. He is only seven months old and will grow to be a fairly large and stunning young man with distinctive gold, black and brown markings and long, luxurious whiskers. Kevin is shy on first approach, but once you begin stroking his long, soft fur he melts in your arms, the purr engine starts and he begs for belly rubs! He is quiet and very laid back, not particularly interested in interaction with other cats but coexists very peacefully with his current 27 roommates. Kevin is ideal for someone looking for a companion cat… a cat that is affectionate and actively desires human contact. Kevin is ready to come into your heart and your home.

Cat litter crisis averted
Posted on March 29, 2011 by Marlies in Sponsors & Friends | Comments Off
The Bonaire Animal Shelter would like to thank all the generous supporters who sought out and donated cat litter to help keep the Shelter’s cat privies pretty. The donations were enough to stave off a real litter shortage crisis until relief arrived. With the help of Tropical Flamingo, the Shelter is now purchasing pallets of 50 pound bags of litter on a regular shipping basis. Thanks again for all the donations and a big thank you to Tropical Flamingo.
FACTOID: The Shelter uses 150 pounds of cat litter every week at a cost of about $45 per week! (Monetary donations to help defray the costs of the new purchase plan are always appreciated.)

Pet of the week: Walter and his mother’s makeup box
Posted on March 09, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off
This week’s column is written by Queen of Cats,Jane Disko Madden, who seems to know what goes on in those furry little heads.
“How can you not smile when you look at Walter? He looks like he got into his mother’s makeup box and decided to paint himself a nice, big, black nose! Walter and his sister Wilhelmina arrived at the Bonaire Animal Shelter as orphans at only two weeks old. A shelter staffer took them home and fed them by hand every three hours until they were old enough to eat on their own….a month- long job that was lovingly performed! As a result Walter is a strong, active and handsome kitten with beautiful grey/green eyes who welcomes and appreciates human companionship.
He is now 12 weeks old and looking to bring a constant smile and lots of affection to the lucky person who takes him into their home. Better yet, Walter and his sister Wilhelmina would be a delightful pair of loving kittens sure to brighten anyone’s day.”
You may see Walter and Wilhelmina and all the other healthy and social adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 – 1, 3 – 5. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Foxy looking Ralph
Posted on January 30, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off
This foxy looking dog with the light colored fur and beautiful light eyes is “Ralph,” a recent arrival at the Bonaire Animal Shelter.
He was homeless and skinny, looking very lost and miserable when someone discovered him and brought him into the Shelter. After being checked over by the vet, given his tests and shots and cleaned up he’s a “new dog,” happy to be alive. What a transformation a little love and attention can create.
Ralph has impressed the Shelter staff with his sociability with people and other dogs and is a “keeper,” they say. He’s about a year old, young enough to train to your way of life, but past the sometimes destructive puppy phase.
You may see him at the Shelter on the Lagun Road, open Monday-Saturday, 9 to 1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Karel, the Doberman lookalike
Posted on October 29, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Karel at the Animal Shelter Bonaire
“Karel” is a Doberman lookalike, otherwise known as a Bonairean Doberman. He’s spent a lot of his one year of life at the Bonaire Animal Shelter, impressing the staff with his intelligence.
Karel is what you would call, “pack savvy.” He knows how to get along with the other dogs in his kennel and he loves to play, not only with the other dogs but with people as well. Nothing bad has ever happened to him and this shows in his gentle demeanor. He’s a quick learner and can be a fine, loyal companion for the right loving owner. And of course he is in perfect, robust health.
The dog adoption fee of NAƒ 125 includes his shots, tests, worming and sterilization.
You may meet Karel and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Prince Edward the Tuxedo Cat
Posted on October 26, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Merle and “Prince” Edward
Merle Marsman, a student at the Aquamarin School, got a nice surprise as part of her 8th birthday celebration: a trip to the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Meeting all the pets was a special treat as her own two cats at home came from the Shelter. Here’s Merle enjoying a cuddle with “Edward.”
Thanks to Jane Madden for the following biography of Edward. “Edward, affectionately known to the Shelter staff as Prince Edward, is a delightful four-month old kitten who is a classic Tuxedo Cat. As the name implies, the white paws, chest and belly of his coat resembles a tuxedo. They are also sometimes called “Jellicle Cats” which comes from T.S. Eliot’s poem made popularly famous in the musical play “Cats.” Many people claim that Tuxedo Cats are significantly smarter than an average cat, and Edward certainly lives up to that reputation.
Many of the Shelter staff spend a lot of time just watching Edward play as he obviously has a vivid imagination that sparks laughter in any onlooker. A leaf becomes a giant monster that Edward attacks by puffing up his fur and jumping at it sideways. A hanging stuffed toy must be approached on his two back legs and embraced in a giant hug. And the list goes on. Edward is a good candidate for someone who is looking to have only one cat as he can certainly entertain himself, but he also loves to play with others and so will fit right into a multi-cat home. After his play sessions, he’s ready to be held and loved and purrs like a fine-tuned engine. Edward has long legs and will be a tall, slim and handsome adult.
Whoever adopts the lovable Prince Edward will join the ranks of Sir Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare and Beethoven….all Tuxedo Cat lovers and owners.”
You may meet Edward and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Jos, the handsome Corgie look-a-like
Posted on September 07, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment

Jos, the short legged Corgie
Meet “Jos,” a very handsome redhead who loves people. He’s a short legged Corgie look-alike. Here he is getting acquainted with Bonaire visitor Colton Reed from Cobb, California. Colton always makes it a point to stop in for a visit to the Shelter when he’s on the island. Jos is one of those dogs with a good self image and confidence.
Even though he’s been at the Shelter only a short time he knows his name and has enchanted the staff with his easy going charm and sociability. Here’s a smart dog with who can learn quickly. Jos is about one and a half years old, has been sterilized, has had his worming and shots and is in perfect health.
You may see him and the other cats and dogs up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Update Flea market

Volunteer Queentje took care of the bar and the money - she did a great job
Shelter Staff member, Greta Kooistra writes that the Animal Shelter Flea Market on Saturday, August 14, earned NAƒ 2.500 with the sale of books, household items and clothes. And NAƒ 168 was donated. All this money goes to help keep our Shelter open for homeless cats and dogs.
Old friends met, new people made friends, the animals were delighted with all the attention and five dogs and five cats found loving homes so it was a wonderful day for everyone!
Thanks to all who participated and especially to all those volunteers who got all the hundreds and hundreds of items organized and together and managed the day!

Terrible Ticks…
Posted on August 25, 2010 by Marlies in News | 4 Comments
This morning we found a dog in the drop off cage outside the Animal Shelter. A very sweet dog! We named her Ella.
There was one big problem with Ella…… She was covered with ticks. As you can see on the pictures, her ears were fully covered with those parasites. Terrible!
Of course we gave her a bath and medication. Dogs can get very sick form those mean parasites and get tick disease. On Bonaire we call it Karpatten disease and dogs can actually die from this.
We do everything to cure Ella. And of course we keep you updated!

Today August 21, is International Homeless Animals’ Day
Posted on August 21, 2010 by Marlies in News | 1 Comment
In 1992, ISAR introduced National Homeless Animals’ Day as an educational vehicle to raise awareness of the pet overpopulation epidemic and its simple solution to spay and neuter.
This special day was introduced with a purpose of informing society of a tragedy that overwhelms animal shelters (also on Bonaire) each year – pet overpopulation.

Terra and Colton: pets of the week
Posted on August 20, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Pets of the week : Terra and Colton at the Animal Shelter Bonaire
Here’s “Terra” cuddling up with visitor Colton Reed, 9. Colton, who lives in Cobb, California, was here on a visit to his Bonaire family and of course wouldn’t miss a trip to the Animal Shelter.
He’s shown with Terra, one of the most outstanding dogs at the Shelter right now. Although she isn’t a striking beauty, her inner character shines through and makes us fall in love with her. She comes highly rated by the Shelter staff and gets along well with kids, other dogs and even cats. She’s about a year and a half old with frizzy fur and short but efficient legs. She’s sterilized and healthy and very social. And she’s enjoying being hugged by Colton.
Colton remarked that he thought it was great that the animals get to be together here at the Shelter and that he could actually go in and play with them. The Shelter he visited in the States wouldn’t allow that, he said. They are all kept in separate cages. Another kudo for our Shelter.
