Pet of the Week, Funny face Bert

Marlies and Bert

Marlies and Bert

Bert,” being hugged by Shelter manager Marlies, is a mystery dog. The Shelter staff knows nothing about his history – who his parents were, where he came from – because he was found in the Kouchi pa Bestia (drop off kennel) outside the gate of the Shelter. But this wire haired pup was immediately welcomed as he looks like a younger version of one of the full time Shelter resident dogs, “Charlie.”That was good news for Bert, especially when he had his check up with the vet and found to be in good health and would be put up for adoption.

He’s about five months old and he should grow up to be a big dog. Another nice thing is that Bert is a mellow and very gentle dog, not in the least hyper, and would be good with children. Just looking at him and that funny face.

Shelter news

Posted on January 19, 2012 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

This last year, 2011, 800 animals were brought into the Shelter (65% dogs and 35% cats). There were 208 adoptions and 30 animals were reunited with their owners. (So you know who to call if you lose your cat or dog.)

The year before, in 2010, there were 217 adoptions. Of the animals brought in 75% were dogs and 25% cats. Compared to 2010, this last year, 2011, there were fewer dogs in the Shelter. The Shelter staff believes this has to do with the free sterilization program. That program will continue in 2012 and they will focus more on the free sterilization of cats.

Happy new year : Fireworks and pets

Fireworks can cause a great deal of stress for dogs and cats. Pets simply don’t understand what’s going on and many are really scared of the loud bangs and flashes.
The poster below is a reminder to be considerate for cats, dogs and other pets on Bonaire when letting off your fireworks!

Shelter auction was a big success !

Posted on December 21, 2011 by Marlies in Sponsors & Friends | Comments Off

Shelter Manager Marlies Tiepel writes: “We made $15,000 at the Shelter Auction on December 10! This was the most successful fundraising event ever for the Shelter. And actually we made more because a Dutch animal welfare fund, Dierenlot (www.dier.nu), doubled the first $1,750 we raised that evening, so we raised $16,750 ($15,000 + $1,750)!

We sold 110 dinner tickets for a fantastic Indonesian meal. The chefs were Rosita Paiman, Boudewijn Scholts and Jerry van de Weteringe. The auction was organized by Annemarie Rozendal and she did a great job!
With the money we made that evening we going to build a totally new cage for the dogs!”

Pet of the week: Puck the dog

Posted on November 15, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

pet of the week Puck the dog and Hanny

pet of the week Puck the dog and Hanny

What a fun fellow “Puck” is. Posing with Bonaire Animal Shelter staff member, Hanny Hoogerkamp, she shows that she’s loving the attention and hugs. Both of them have big smiles on their faces. Puck has the most amazing expressions. Along with her startled looking eyebrows she (usually) likes to keep one perky ear up and one down – very cute. Puck is about 13 months old, she’s tall and slender but with an athletic build. She’s friendly, as you can see, she’s playful and she would be an excellent watch dog. And she gets along with other dogs as well. She’s healthy, has been checked out by the vet, has had her shots, worming – the works. All that for a $75 adoption fee for dogs. And that also includes sterilization and an identity chip which is mandatory if the dog is transported to the US or Europe.

You are invited to stop by and meet Puck and the other dogs and cats up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday 8 am – 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Volunteers needed!

Posted on November 10, 2011 by Marlies in Current Activities | Comments Off

The Bonaire Animal Shelter needs volunteers of all ages. And it’s a fun job too, according to young volunteers, Jordan and Justin. These two boys spend their Thursday afternoons helping out. They especially like playing with the cats. Why do they do this rather than playing video games or fooling around? It’s because, they say, “Animals are important and they need our help.” Great words for all of us! There are all sorts of jobs that volunteers can do from just playing with the dogs and cats (“socializing” they call it) to walking them and giving some obedience training, feeding, giving medications, cleaning up. For a full list of what’s available to do give them a call at 717-4989.

Pet of the week: Farah, the full of fun Dalamation mix

Farah, the full of fun Dalamation

Farah, the full of fun Dalamation

What a great pal “Farah,” our Pet of the Week, could be. She is full of fun, she’s energetic and would love to find an owner who could appreciate her. She’d make an excellent watch dog who would be protective of her owners, but she’s also very sweet and playful. Those humans who exercise would really make a good fit for her. Farah is about two years old and has some Dalmatian background which gives her that snowy white coat with black detailing – very attractive.

She’s a medium sized dog but with a big personality. Keep in mind that Farah has been checked out by the vet, has been wormed and given her shots and the adoption fee includes that as well as sterilization and even a micro chip that’s been inserted under her skin for identification.

You may see Farah and the other pets up for adoption at the Bonaire Animal Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717- 4989.

Pet of the Week: Iron, the comical looking dog

Posted on August 21, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Here are “Iron” (pronounced “Eye Ron”) and long time Shelter employee,Kenneth Piar. As you can tell by the expression on Iron’s face, Kenneth is a good friend. Iron is a comical looking dog with his cute face – one ear up, one ear down and that wiry fur. If the Hollywood movie producers saw him they’d hire him in a minute. He’s even cuter than the dog, Sandy, in “Annie!” But Hollywood may not be for him. He’d rather find a nice friendly and adoring master or mistress and perform for them instead. When he was just a puppy someone put him in the drop off cage (Kouchi Pa Bestia). He was very skinny and malnourished. But look at him now. What a guy. He’s friendly, not aggressive, but full of energy  and lots of fun. He’s a smarty too and should be easy to train. At one and a half years old, he’s healthy, sterilized, has his microchip and is ready to go. (Do we hear Hollywood calling?) You may see Iron at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989. Check out the website. It’s amazingly up to date with all sorts of new and historical information.
Good news! Former Pets of the Week, Louis, Eveline and Lily Marlene have all been adopted! Congratulations to all – pets and their new owners.May you enjoy many happy times.

Shelter’s Pakus di Pruga – Every Saturday

Posted on August 12, 2011 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

Pakus di Pruga volunteers

Pakus di Pruga volunteers

Have you discovered the Shelter’s every Saturday Garage Sale yet? The Pakus di Pruga is housed in the building across the street from Brandaris Café and is manned by volunteers from 8 am to 5 pm. And there’s plenty of free parking!

On a visit last Saturday we found lots and lots of books, racks and racks of clothes, house wares, a child’s bike, appliances, even an old refrigerator (the freezer works but not the fridge!). And the nice thing is that new things come in all the time. You’ll most likely find another treasure trove there next Saturday.

To donate items you may drop them off at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road during opening hours. Small things (like books) may be brought to the Garage Sale itself. It’s a Win-Win-Win situation: people get rid of what they don’t want, other people buy what they want, and the Shelter can be kept open for unwanted cats and dogs.

Shelter Alert: Volunteers Needed!!!

Posted on July 13, 2011 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

Shelter Alert: There is a big need right now for volunteers to come in and socialize with the animals. The cats love having people around to cuddle them and play with them. The dogs would like to have someone to walk them on a leash, maybe teach them how to sit and just have fun. If you can spare a few hours, call the Shelter at 717-4989. You’d be doing a great service – and have a good time as well! The Shelter is on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm.

Pet of the week: American Bull Dog with a Dutch Name

Posted on June 29, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Pet of the week: Brammetje

Pet of the week: Brammetje

“Brammetje” may have a Dutch name but he’s truly an American bull dog. He’s strong, he’s smart, but he is an extremely mellow  fellow.

This handsome guy was seen wandering around Lagun for about three weeks. It was a lucky day for him when a Good Samaritan found him and brought him into the Bonaire Animal Shelter where he was welcomed with love, a visit to the vet for a thorough exam, shots and good nutritious meals. And how he responded: When someone comes into his pen he is so happy and welcoming, and he just wiggles with delight.

Brammetje is a young dog, under a year old. He needs a good, educated-about-dogs, kind of owner. Or maybe a couple, but someone who can give him the time he needs to show his potential. Although he’d probably like to be an “only dog,” he can deal with one other. At the moment the Shelter has a number of big dogs. Many of them have come from the street and as staff member Monique says, “These dogs need a job!” So it a nice opportunity for people who want a good guard dog.

You may meet Brammetje and the other dogs and cats that are up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Free treatment of mange on Bonaire

Posted on June 20, 2011 by Marlies in Current Activities, News | Comments Off

Dog at the shelter Bonaite that suffers from mange

Dog at the shelter Bonaite that suffers from mange

The last few weeks the shelter received a lot of complaints regarding dogs that suffer from mange.

Mange occurs when a dog becomes infested with microscopic mites. These mites live on a dog’s skin, digging in and sucking the dog’s blood. They reproduce quickly and are highly contagious. Symptoms of mange can include hair loss, itching and skin inflammation. Mange spreads quickly across a dog’s body if it’s not treated.

The Bonaire Animal Shelter offers free treatment of mange. Call the shelter for more information (0599-7174989).

Pet of the week: Diva dog “Lily Marlene”

Diva Dog "Lily Marlene"

Diva Dog "Lily Marlene"

“Lily Marlene” is a pretty fancy name for this funny little pup you might say. But there’s a reason, says the Bonaire Animal Shelter staff. She a tiny little creature but she has an enormous personality and is such a character and is so affectionate. Her face looks like a Meerkat’s and she must have some Chihuahua ancestor there someplace. This little diva, Lily Marlene, was found hanging around a fish shop and brought into the Shelter. She’s about a year old and is in perfect health, having been examined by the vet, given her tests, worming and shots.

You may see her and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 to 1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989.

Good News: Do you remember “Sammy”, the near death, starved, abused and neglected dog that was brought into the Shelter? There was something about him that made the staff decide not to euthanize him after all. With the love and attention he got at the Shelter he turned into a handsome, friendly very special dog.

The good news is that Sammy has been adopted. What a life he’s lived already in his short time. Congratulations, Sammy and to your new owners. May you have a long and happy life together!

Pet of the week: Smart Carlos

Posted on May 15, 2011 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Merle, Carlos and Greta

Merle, Carlos and Greta

“Carlos” is such a sweet and affectionate dog that he can’t help having admirers. In this photo, Merle Marsman, a great friend of the Bonaire Animal Shelter, gets a nice kiss from Carlos while Shelter staff member, Greta Kooistra, shows him off.

Carlos is about six months old and has already been sterilized. A boy found him in the street with a sore leg. Everyone was very concerned but luckily he was cured. And it turns out he is very smart. He can actually lift the latch on the door to his communal cage! But once the Shelter staff found out they had to tie it closed. But smartness does have its advantages because Carlos can catch on fast when he’s being trained.

To meet Carlos and the other adoptees stop by the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9– 1 and 3 -5. Tel. 717-4989.

Both are about seven years old but act like puppies. They love to play and are frisky and full of fun. They’re big girls and would really appreciate a nice yard to play in or someone to run with. They don’t have a mean bone in their bodies; they’re just sweetie ladies who need to have a loving owner. They’re in top health, love people, have been sterilized. They’re ready to go.
