Diva Dog "Lily Marlene"

Diva Dog "Lily Marlene"

“Lily Marlene” is a pretty fancy name for this funny little pup you might say. But there’s a reason, says the Bonaire Animal Shelter staff. She a tiny little creature but she has an enormous personality and is such a character and is so affectionate. Her face looks like a Meerkat’s and she must have some Chihuahua ancestor there someplace. This little diva, Lily Marlene, was found hanging around a fish shop and brought into the Shelter. She’s about a year old and is in perfect health, having been examined by the vet, given her tests, worming and shots.

You may see her and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 to 1 and 3 to 5. Tel. 717-4989.

Pet of the Week: Alexia, aka “Little Mother”

Posted on December 31, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment

Alexia aka 'Little Mama'

Alexia aka 'Little Mama'

“Alexia,” this alert looking black and tan beauty, is known at the Bonaire Animal Shelter as “Little Mother.” She was brought into the Shelter with four totally different looking puppies, father(s) unknown. Alexia, a very mellow and relaxed dog, was considered to be the perfect mom to these pups.

All the puppies have been adopted and Alexia has been sterilized so can now live her own life. She’s very intelligent and serene at the same time. What a nice kind of dog to have around. When it’s necessary she barks, so she would be a good guard dog, protecting those she loves. Alexia is about one and a half years old.

You may see her at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Dog adoption BonaireCongratulations to new owners Nuria and Leon of Sunshine Pool Care photographed right after they adopted these two darling little pups, brother and sister, Edgar and Eveline.

The nine week old puppies were brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter along with their mother, “Kaya” (so named because she was a street dog) and seven other brothers and sisters.  The seven others died but Mom “Kaya” has already been adopted.

All the best to the new family unit.

Finn and Petunia

Posted on November 27, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

finnThis young lady, Finn, nine years old, is a regular volunteer at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Finn is a student at the Pelican School and you will find here at the Shelter every  wednesday, helping out with all the pets. Here she is with new arrival, “Petunia,” a  seven-week-old puppy who came into the Shelter with her brother. Their mother was hit and killed by a car but luckily the puppies were found and brought into the Shelter.
Finn’s job that day was to bathe both puppies and she did a fine job. Petunia’s brother already has been adopted but he and Petunia will have to stay on until they are a little older and stronger. Both puppies are healthy and in perfect shape for their age. They’ve had their tests, worming and will be sterilized when they’re old enough. You can always be sure that adopting a dog or cat from the Shelter assures you of a “nearly perfect” pet – healthy and social.

You may see “Petunia” and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road,
open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

It’s a dog! It’s a rabbit! No, it’s a dog.

Pet of the week hendrika sept 2009It’s a dog! It’s a rabbit! No, it’s a dog. Check out those stand up ears on sweet little “Hendrika.” Some dogs wag their tails when they’re happy or excited, but Hendrika does even more when she gets those ears to stand up. Pretty amazing.

This happy little pup is friendly and fun, but she’s not a high energy dog. She prefers to stay in the background; she’s not be a pushy type like many others around.

Hendrika is about three months old and is in top health. She’s a medium sized dog with easy to care for short caramel colored fur which encourages petting.

Pup Dorothy is an example to us all

Posted on June 19, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Dorothy july 2009This little white pup, “Dorothy,” can be an example to us all.
She had a very traumatic experience when some young children threw her into an area where some big dogs attacked her, taking a nice chunk out of her hind quarters. The misguided children thought it was fun.

Luckily a good Samaritan in the neighborhood saw the incident and saved her. The good news is that despite this scary experience Dorothy is a sweet, affectionate, and very trusting pup who just aims to please. She’s a people lover. Dorothy is only about two and a half months and about four or five kilos. She’s a tiny little lady who will stay that way. She’s had her checkup by the vet, tests, worming and shots and will be sterilized when she’s old enough.

Monique and Coco

Posted on May 08, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Monique and CocoOne of the managers of the Bonaire Animal Shelter, Monique, is shown holding “Coco,” an adorable cuddly pup. Not only is his coloring an unusual chocolate brown with caramel accents but he has gorgeous green eyes. What a looker. He’s only about two months old. He was brought into the Shelter by a Good Samaritan who brings in pups who are unwanted and/or abandoned. This lady is known as “the dog woman,” an animal lover. Lucky for Coco that she found him because now he’s in a safe and loving place with good food and tender care. Coco is in perfect health, having been examined by the vet. He’s been tested, wormed and has had his shots.

The Shelter adoption fee of NAƒ 105 for dogs includes all this as well as sterilization when he’s old enough. Stop by for a visit at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road. They’re open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Telephone: 717-4989.

Meet Andre

Posted on March 13, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

AndreMeet “Andre,” this funny, fuzzy pup with such interesting green eyes. Andre was found at the Papa Cornes School where he was having a wonderful time playing with the children. Sadly, no one came to claim him, so for his own good he was brought to the Bonaire Animal Shelter where he could be cared for. He has settled in after having been checked by the vet, given his shots and worming, but he really does miss playing with children.

Andre is about two and a half months old, has a cute and quizzical face and is just waiting for the right family to come along. It really would be perfect if the family had young children who could appreciate a playful pup like Andre.

You may see him and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Five adorable puppies

Posted on December 05, 2008 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

labradorsHere’s a rare opportunity for someone who wants a very healthy half purebred Labrador pup. Right now at the Bonaire Animal Shelter there are five full-of-fun puppies who were brought in by someone who attests to the fact that the mom was a pure bred Lab who had a rendezvous with an adventurous street dog (kacho di kaya). The result was five adorable puppies, all of whom are real friendly and nice.

They’re about nine weeks old, very social as they’ve been living with other dogs and cats and playing with the staff and volunteers of the Shelter. As are all the other adoptees these pups have been examined by the vet, had their shots, worming and tests and will be sterilized when they’re old enough. All this for the dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105.

Stop by and meet them at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Adorable Kai

Posted on October 10, 2008 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

kaiHere’s “Kai,” an adorable pup with the most amazing colored eyes that make him look like a wise old soul. Kai was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter along with his brother, Kevin (Pet of the Week 9/5-19), by a caring person who saw a chòller (drug addict) trying to capture the pups in order to sell them. But they escaped and are now adjusting beautifully to life at the Shelter. However, their dream is to be adopted as a special dog for a special person.

Kai is about four months old. He’s playful and full of fun and can be a dedicated listener. Just look at that face. As are all the other adoptees at the Shelter Kai has been checked out by the vet, given his worming and other tests as well as his shots. He’ll be sterilized when he’s old enough. All that for the very reasonable adoption fee of NAƒ105. In these days of higher and higher prices that’s a real bargain and you get a healthy, happy and social pet.

Stop by and visit the Shelter on the Lagoen Road. It’s open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Telephone
717-4989.

Fury little Flo

Posted on September 19, 2008 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

FloFurry little “Flo” is the star of a happy ending to a very hard luck story.

She was found on the street and was totally infested with ticks and fleas. Flo might have just withered away and died a long, slow, agonizing death had not someone caught her and brought her into the Bonaire Animal Shelter. It was quite a tedious, lengthy and tiring job for the staff to rid her of all the vermin. But look at her now. She’s gorgeous, and she’s healthy and lots of fun to have around. The experts believe she was born around the beginning of April but certainly not an April Fool! Because she is such a fine dog with good character is why the Shelter staff decided to work with her and bring her into good health.

You may meet Flo at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm. 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Are you starved for pet company but can’t have a pet of your own? Why not become a volunteer at the Shelter where you will be very much appreciated by not only the staff but the pets themselves. You may choose your own hours and times. They’re pretty flexible there. One of the reasons the adoptable pets are so social and love people is because there are people like you who spend time just “socializing” with them. There are numerous other volunteer jobs too. Give them a cal
