Harbourtown Bonaire Sponsors puppies in Shelter
Harbourtown Real Estate donated a year of puppy food to the puppy cage at the Shelter.
What a generous gesture. You too can sponsor the food for a year or more for a cage at the Shelter. In return you’ll have your name proudly displayed on that cage and know that you’ve done good!

Shelter Shots
Posted on March 30, 2011 by Marlies in News | Comments Off
Puppies Sammy and India get their shots from Shelter staff members Monique and Marlies, and volunteer Gitta (center). To fight against the deadly Parvo and other diseases these shots should be given to all puppies and dogs on the island.
The first shot in a series is administered when the puppy is six to nine weeks old. Then as an adult they should get the shot every year.

Pet of the Week: Alexia, aka “Little Mother”
Posted on December 31, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment
“Alexia,” this alert looking black and tan beauty, is known at the Bonaire Animal Shelter as “Little Mother.” She was brought into the Shelter with four totally different looking puppies, father(s) unknown. Alexia, a very mellow and relaxed dog, was considered to be the perfect mom to these pups.
All the puppies have been adopted and Alexia has been sterilized so can now live her own life. She’s very intelligent and serene at the same time. What a nice kind of dog to have around. When it’s necessary she barks, so she would be a good guard dog, protecting those she loves. Alexia is about one and a half years old.
You may see her at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Adoption of Edgar and Eveline

Congratulations to new owners Nuria and Leon of Sunshine Pool Care photographed right after they adopted these two darling little pups, brother and sister, Edgar and Eveline.
The nine week old puppies were brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter along with their mother, “Kaya” (so named because she was a street dog) and seven other brothers and sisters. The seven others died but Mom “Kaya” has already been adopted.
All the best to the new family unit.

Who Cares? They did!
Posted on February 07, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 2 Comments
Last week on Monday Leandro Martinez and Luis Flores were conducting a guided tour on ATV quads with cruise ship passengers.
Somewhere along the road from Lagun to Spelonk one of the tourists spotted a puppy. The whole caravan came to a standstill when one puppy after another came stumbling from behind the rocks. The joint effort resulted in the rescue of 10 puppies of barely six weeks old. Alas, the mother was nowhere to be found.
That afternoon Leandro and Luis came to the Bonaire Animal Shelter saying, “We have a problem,” and with big smiles they handed the Shelter’s staff one of the quad’s blue boxes filled to capacity with the 10 puppies. Sadly, three of the pups didn’t make it, but the other seven are doing fine.
As they were covered in a tsunami of lice they were bathed repeatedly, they were also dewormed and got their shots. They’re still a bit wobbly and sleeping a lot, but in a week or two they will be strong and handsome and ready for adoption! Thanks to Leandro and Luis and the tourists seven little dogs’ lives were saved because they cared!
In addition to this event, the Shelter has built a new facility for the public to use: a kennel outside the gate where people can drop off pets at any time. Leaving an animal at the Shelter has always been for free and it always will be, but somehow there are still people who prefer to dump the pets in the mondi which hopefully won’t be necessary anymore.

The shelter needs volunteers – Pups of the week
Posted on January 16, 2009 by Marlies in News | Comments Off
One of the nicest things about the Bonaire Animal Shelter is that it’s such a fun place to volunteer. Where else can you get so much appreciation for just showing up!
When you see those wagging tails and smiling dog faces you’ll know what I mean. In the photo are three of the young volunteers enjoying being overrun by puppies. Amber has been a loyal volunteer since 2005 and one of the pups’ favorites. She invited her good friend, Daniela, to join her and now both girls are there every Saturday morning. Jens is just starting out as a volunteer and is doing a good job getting the puppies to play and have fun.
Right now the Shelter needs volunteers for during the week, Monday through Friday, preferably from 8 to 10 am to work with the dogs – cleaning, feeding and just socializing with them. Other times are okay too. (The cats at the moment seem to have their own team of special volunteers who’ve got them covered just fine.)
If you have some time give them a call at 717-4989. There are lots of puppies to choose from at the Shelter right now and more are coming in every day. We all love them but when there are too many what can we do? The Shelter has been running a Sterilization Campaign for a number of years, trying to make a dent in the number of unwanted puppies and kittens being born.
For those who can’t afford it, the sterilization is free or whatever the owner is able to pay. Please, if you feel strongly about helping, contribute to the “Sterilization Fund,” MCB Account 10616410. The money goes only for sterilizations. Any amount is very much appreciated and can make a big difference. This last year the Fund provided for 225 sterilizations!

Parvo season
Posted on December 05, 2008 by Marlies in News | Comments Off
It’s Parvo season again so make sure your dogs, especially puppies, have been inoculated. This is a killer disease so keep an eye on your young dogs. Symptoms include throwing up, bloody diarrhea and lack of energy. It’s very contagious so keep your puppies and dogs safe from other dogs.
