Pieter pet of the week

Pieter our pet of the week

We couldn’t resist taking a photo of this darling little cat, “Pieter,” hiding out among the branches in the cat cage at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Jane Disko Madden, kitty guru of the Shelter, explains. “Pieter is a very fuzzy, very funny little guy! He arrived with his sister, Petra, as seven-weekold, very feral kittens. With the love and encouragement of the Shelter staff, they were nurtured into loveable sweethearts now 10 weeks old!

Petra has been adopted and will begin sailing the Caribbean with her co-captain in the next few weeks. Pieter is waiting for his forever companion to arrive. Pieter’s grey, brown and black striped fur is extremely soft and fuzzy and along with his white mittens and socks he’ll be a very photogenic pal. He is not afraid of anything….dog, cat or person…and will play with cats five times his size and win the play battle! But when playtime is done, he’ll curl up in your lap for a dose of pets and an afternoon snooze.”

Of course, like all the other adoptees at the Shelter, Pieter is in excellent health, having been checked out by the vet, had his test for feline leukemia, wormed and will be sterilized when he’s old enough. All this is included in the cat adoption fee of NAƒ 95. You may meet him at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

On Sunday, July 18, those very valuable volunteers who give their time to the Bonaire Animal Shelter got together at the Chill Out Bar to socialize with each other and to view the premier of the new Bonaire Animal Shelter video.

The video was made by a creative young local film producer and impressed the crowd. The film shows graphically what the animal  problems are, primarily too many unwanted cats and dogs, and how they are dealing with them.

Shots of the Shelter residents are interspersed with short interviews with some of the Shelter staff. Informative, creative and entertaining. You may view the 20 minute video via the You Tube Channel of the Animal Shelter Bonaire.

Gibby in the supermarket of kittens

Posted on June 13, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

pet of the week june 2010 hettieHere’s  Bonaire Animal Shelter Volunteer Hettie Holian showing off one of the 15 adorable kittens now available for adoption. (We think it’s 10-week-old “Gibby.”)
What a choice of beautiful kittens right now – all under three months old.
As Shelter volunteer Jane Madden tells us, “It’s a supermarket of kittens.
They come in all colors – red, red and white, black, black and white and everything in between.  And they’re all wonderful!” All these robust little guys and girls are full of fun and love to be cuddled. If you’ve been thinking about getting a kitten to love, now’s the time to make your choice. The NAƒ 95 cat adoption fee covers all: testing for feline leukemia, vet exam, shots, worming and sterilization when they’re old enough.
Meet these kittens and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm.

Bonny the Superdog Anniversary at the Animal Shelter and Fleamarket

Posted on May 29, 2010 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

On Saturday May 15th the volunteers of the Bonaire Animal Shelter, on the Lagoen Road/Kaminda Lagoen, celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Bonny Superdog free sterilization program and organized another Book and Flea Market. Weather conditions were perfect and loads and loads of books, clothing, furniture and other stuff were for sale for very friendly prices. There were also drinks and home made local snacks for sale. A couple of hundred people visited the Shelter. The atmosphere was very cozy and relaxed.

A total of NAƒ 3235,17 was collected and will be applied to the Superdog program.Last year some five hundred dogs were sterilized. A special word of thanks to the 15 volunteers who contributed to the success of this Book and Flea Market and to Martines Import for supplying the tents that provided the so needed shade.

Unwanted Animal Drop-off

People may now drop off unwanted, stray or found cats or dogs at the Shelter at any time of the day or night.

This new animal cage (Kouchi pa Bestia), outside the gate to the Shelter, has two separate compartments with water bowls and it’s checked every few hours during the day.

Hopefully, people will put their unwanted animals in the cage rather than dumping them in the mondi or by the side of the road. The Shelter receives an average of 1,200 animals each year.

Thanks to Valerie’s Airport shop for providing the materials and to the Shelter staff and volunteers who provided the labor to build the cage. As of last week, nine dogs and one cat had been put in the cage. ”

Can you help?

Posted on November 30, 2009 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

The Shelter is looking for a volunteer to sell at the Shelter stand
at the Cruise Ship Market at Wilhelmina Park on cruise ship visitor days. It’s an extremely worthwhile job because all the proceeds go towards keeping the Shelter open to take in unwanted pets. You will be selling tee shirts, license plates, calendars and Germaine Nijdam hand painted signs.

If you can help please call Amina at 786-1905.

It’s a fun job too, other volunteers report.

Finn and Petunia

Posted on November 27, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

finnThis young lady, Finn, nine years old, is a regular volunteer at the Bonaire Animal Shelter. Finn is a student at the Pelican School and you will find here at the Shelter every  wednesday, helping out with all the pets. Here she is with new arrival, “Petunia,” a  seven-week-old puppy who came into the Shelter with her brother. Their mother was hit and killed by a car but luckily the puppies were found and brought into the Shelter.
Finn’s job that day was to bathe both puppies and she did a fine job. Petunia’s brother already has been adopted but he and Petunia will have to stay on until they are a little older and stronger. Both puppies are healthy and in perfect shape for their age. They’ve had their tests, worming and will be sterilized when they’re old enough. You can always be sure that adopting a dog or cat from the Shelter assures you of a “nearly perfect” pet – healthy and social.

You may see “Petunia” and the other pets up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road,
open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

He’s just about three months old now and is so affectionate and smart too. He was brought in with his sister because there were just too many cats at his previous home.

Timo is well adjusted, a mellow fellow and can fit in with other cats in a household. He’s been checked out by the vet, has had his inoculations and tests and will be sterilized when he’s old enough. All this is included in the cat adoption fee of NAƒ 75.

You may see Timo and the other social and healthy animals at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Young Vincent

Posted on February 27, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Mary Ann VincentThe adoptees at the Bonaire Animal Shelter love their volunteers. We’ve shown you volunteer students, a part time resident and now here’s a high school biology teacher and columnist for The Bonaire Reporter, Mary Ann Koops. She’s been a regular at the Shelter for awhile now and inspires her students to do the same.

Mary Ann is cuddling with “Vincent,” a long haired, angora, elegant white cat with black markings, especially on his nose. As Mary Ann says, “It looks like someone spilled some black paint on his nose.”
Young Vincent, only seven months old, was found abandoned in a neighbor’s yard after the neighbors moved away. Despite this uncaring treatment Vincent is a real people cat. He just loves them and will follow them around. Not only that but he gets along great with all the other cats in the cat cage. He’s just an “easy” cat, say the staff, and is therefore one of the favorites. As are all the other adoptees at the Shelter, Vincent is in top health, has had his shots, tests and worming and is sterilized.

You may see Vincent at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Telephone 717-4989.

If you would like to make a contribution as a volunteer to the Shelter, give them a call. They are losing a lot of their faithful volunteers who are leaving the island and could certainly use some new animal lovers. They especially need people between 8 and 10 am but other times as well. They’re doing a magnificent job with the animals but they can’t do it alone.

The shelter needs volunteers – Pups of the week

Posted on January 16, 2009 by Marlies in News | Comments Off

puppies of the weekOne of the nicest things about the Bonaire Animal Shelter is that it’s such a fun place to volunteer. Where else can you get so much appreciation for just showing up!

When you see those wagging tails and smiling dog faces you’ll know what I mean. In the photo are three of the young volunteers enjoying being overrun by puppies. Amber has been a loyal volunteer since 2005 and one of the pups’ favorites. She invited her good friend, Daniela, to join her and now both girls are there every Saturday morning. Jens is just starting out as a volunteer and is doing a good job getting the puppies to play and have fun.

Right now the Shelter needs volunteers for during the week, Monday through Friday, preferably from 8 to 10 am to work with the dogs – cleaning, feeding and just socializing with them. Other times are okay too. (The cats at the moment seem to have their own team of special volunteers who’ve got them covered just fine.)

If you have some time give them a call at 717-4989. There are lots of puppies to choose from at the Shelter right now and more are coming in every day. We all love them but when there are too many what can we do? The Shelter has been running a Sterilization Campaign for a number of years, trying to make a dent in the number of unwanted puppies and kittens being born.

For those who can’t afford it, the sterilization is free or whatever the owner is able to pay. Please, if you feel strongly about helping, contribute to the “Sterilization Fund,” MCB Account 10616410. The money goes only for sterilizations. Any amount is very much appreciated and can make a big difference. This last year the Fund provided for 225 sterilizations!
