pet of the week Puck the dog and Hanny

What a fun fellow “Puck” is. Posing with Bonaire Animal Shelter staff member, Hanny Hoogerkamp, she shows that she’s loving the attention and hugs. Both of them have big smiles on their faces. Puck has the most amazing expressions. Along with her startled looking eyebrows she (usually) likes to keep one perky ear up and one down – very cute. Puck is about 13 months old, she’s tall and slender but with an athletic build. She’s friendly, as you can see, she’s playful and she would be an excellent watch dog. And she gets along with other dogs as well. She’s healthy, has been checked out by the vet, has had her shots, worming – the works. All that for a $75 adoption fee for dogs. And that also includes sterilization and an identity chip which is mandatory if the dog is transported to the US or Europe.

You are invited to stop by and meet Puck and the other dogs and cats up for adoption at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday 8 am – 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Ronald, the big black dog at the Shelter Bonaire

Posted on June 18, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | 1 Comment

Pet of the week Ronald june 2010Ronald, the big black dog in the photo, looks like a mellow guy and he is with those he loves. But watch out if someone comes along with bad intentions! He turns into a  very efficient watch dog. Ronald is about a year and a half and was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter because his owner was moving to a place where no pets are allowed.

What a pleasant and smart dog, and he’s friendly and affectionate too. You have to meet him in person to really see what a great animal he is. He’s healthy, having been checked out by the vet, has had his shots, tests, worming and even his sterilization already.

He’s ready to go to someone who will treat him with the love and respect he deserves. You may meet him at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm, 3 to 5 pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Yoris the beagle look-a-like

Posted on May 30, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

Pet of the Week Yoris Animal shelter BonaireYoris may be a beagle look-alike but he’s bigger and more impressive than that. In fact he’s considered an excellent watch dog and he should deter anyone who shouldn’t be in his yard. But with his human friends Yoris is very mellow, shy even, and he takes awhile to warm up to people and other dogs. But when he does it makes it all worth it. This handsome pup is about a year and a half old; he’s been sterilized,  has had his shots, worming and tests and is ready to go to an appreciative home.

The adoption fee at the Shelter for dogs is NAƒ 125 and includes all this. To meet Yoris and the other healthy and social pets up for adoption visit the Bonaire  Animal Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 1 and 3 to 5.
Tel. 717-4989.

Young Querien and her sister Queenie

Posted on March 10, 2010 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

pet of the week QuirienYoung “Quirien” was brought into the Bonaire Animal Shelter along with her sister “Queenie.” The people who brought them in just had too many dogs to take care of.

“Quirien” is so proud and a darling. She’s alert – just look at those standing up ears – and loves to show off the snow white fur on her chest. She’s friendly but not to someone who shouldn’t be in her yard. This girl will be a fine watch dog. It was good luck for Quirien and Queenie to be brought in because at the Shelter if the dog is in good health and is social with people they will be put up for adoption. Both dogs have been checked out by the vet, had their shots, worming and tests and are ready to go. When they are a little older they will be sterilized. All this for the dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105.

You may meet her and the other adoptees at the Shelter on the Lagoen Road, open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5pm. Tel. 717-4989.

Marloes, the friendly watch dog

Posted on May 22, 2009 by Marlies in Pet of the Week | Comments Off

marloesIf there were a popularity contest at the Bonaire Animal Shelter, “Marloes” would be one of the winners because she is such a people dog and is so friendly. She gets along fine with her kennel mates but what she really prefers and loves are people! Her previous owner had no time for her; that’s why she’s here at the Shelter, looking for just the right appreciative new owner. An added bonus is that she’d be a great watch dog. She would say, “I love my owners and I want to protect them as best I can.” Well said, Marloes.

Marloes is one and a half years old. She’s a medium sized dog with easy-to care- for short, integrated black and brown fur. She has a hint of dark eyeliner around her alert brown eyes. And of course she’s been checked out by the vet, given her shots, worming, sterilized and pronounced in perfect health. The dog adoption fee of NAƒ 105 includes all this. Did you know that every pet you adopt from the Bonaire Animal Shelter has been tested not only for its health but for its sociability? Every pet is well known to the staff as to its personality. Does it like children? Does it prefer adults? How about other pets in the household? Will it get along with them? Is it a good watch dog? So often those animals that are so highly bred have “racial weaknesses”- weaknesses of the breed. One thing you can be sure of with the pets in Bonaire, and that is that there is a huge gene pool – with new ones entering the island all the time, brought by their owners! Just about every dog and cat here is one of a kind.

You don’t have to go through its genealogy to determine who it is – just get to know him or her. That will tell you if he or she is the one for you. Isn’t that simple and nice? If you don’t believe me just pay a visit to the Shelter on the Lagoen Road and meet some of the adorable personalities there. The Shelter is open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. Telephone 717-4989. We were told that “Evo,” our pup of the week in the April 24 edition has been adopted by a very fine pet-loving family. Happy life to Evo and his new owners.
