Our mission
At Animal Shelter Bonaire, we dedicate ourselves every day to helping dogs and cats in need. With a big heart for animals, we not only provide shelter and care but also actively work on long-term solutions such as sterilization and education.
We do this with love and commitment, and in partnership with the Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire (OLB). Our agreements are outlined in a care contract, for which we receive a small subsidy. Below you’ll find the four tasks included in this contract with the OLB.
Preventing and reducing animal suffering
We strive for a future in which all animals on Bonaire are healthy and well cared for. That’s why we help animals in need, provide medical care, and work to improve overall animal welfare on the island.
Sheltering unwanted animals
Some dogs and cats no longer have a home. At our shelter, they receive a safe space, proper care, and all the time and attention they need. Our goal is to rehome them with responsible owners.
Ending animal overpopulation
Through our free sterilization program, we help reduce the number of unwanted animals in a responsible way. This creates a healthier balance and a better future for both the animals and the community.
Information and education for the people of Bonaire
Responsible pet ownership starts with knowledge. We provide information about animal welfare, sterilization, and proper pet care, so that everyone can contribute to a more animal-friendly Bonaire.
Dependending on donations
The subsidy we receive for carrying out these four tasks covers only 10% of our total costs. We are incredibly grateful to all the generous donors who support us with goods, services, and financial contributions. Thanks to them, we can care for our animals every single day.
Still, it remains a challenge to make ends meet, which is why we are looking for sustainable sources of income to continue our work in the long term.
