General FAQ
How many animals are currently in the shelter?
At the moment, we care for around 165 dogs and 70 cats. That number changes regularly, as new animals arrive and others are adopted. Every day, we provide them with food, medical care, and of course, as much love and attention as possible.
How do animals end up at the shelter?
Most of the animals are found on the streets or have been abandoned.” This is incorrect! The Shelter does not take in street/stray dogs. Our animals are primarily either surrendered to us or found abandoned in the mondi away from population centers not “on the streets”. So the answer to this question should read: “Most of the animals have been abandoned or are surrendered by their owners who can no longer care for them. We also work with the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) to provide support in cases of neglect or overpopulation. Every animal that comes through our doors gets a second chance.
Is Animal Shelter Bonaire open to visitors?
Absolutely! We’d be delighted! You’re more than welcome to visit us, take a behind-the-scenes look, and of course, spend some cuddle time with our dogs and cats. We love showing what we do and introducing you to the animals who are waiting for a new home.
What are your opening hours?
We are open on the following days:
Monday to Friday: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Saturday: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Sunday and public holidays: closed
You are very welcome to visit during these hours and meet our animals!
How can I stay updated on the latest news from the shelter?
Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates, adoption stories, new animals, and events. You can also easily contact us or comment on our posts there. This way, you can stay connected – even from a distance!
How is Animal Shelter Bonaire funded?
We receive a small subsidy from the Public Entity Bonaire, but this covers only 10% of our costs. The rest of our work is made possible through donations, sponsorship contributions, and initiatives such as Pakus di Pruga, our secondhand store, and our stall at the Cruise Market, where all proceeds go directly to the shelter.
Why does Animal Shelter Bonaire offer free sterilization?
Overpopulation of dogs and cats is a major issue on Bonaire. Without sterilization by their owners, companion animals continue to reproduce, and many puppies and kittens are unwanted and are surrendered or abandoned. Through our free sterilization program, owners are encouraged and assisted to help reduce the overpopulation problem in an animal-friendly way at no cost to them.
How does adoption work at Animal Shelter Bonaire?
If you want to adopt a dog or cat, you can visit the shelter to meet them. We’re happy to help you find the animal that best matches you. After a conversation and approval, you can take your new companion home. We ask for an adoption fee ($100 per dog and $75 per cat) to cover part of the medical care and food.
